The Piebald Deer

The cautious deer enjoyed one fallen apple then looked around nervously feeling vulnerable and unable to defend the sweet juicy abundance she had happened upon, so ate quickly as if the apple was not hers to eat. This solitary deer was different, not like her parents or siblings wearing calf-high white stockings, a white muffler around her throat and a spotted white coat over her piebald back as if she was not theirs to accept. The observant watcher noted all these things before the strange doe disappeared down the hill to whatever food, safety, companionship, hunger, danger or isolation awaited her there. The hopeful watcher imagined himself a Cherokee elder being visited by the spirit of a doe he had killed with an arrow before trickster rabbit lost the race and was condemned to eat weeds and sharp antlers were awarded to fast deer. The thoughtful watcher pondered what awaits when the cheaters and tricksters get their comeuppance and the beautiful unique and gentle ones discover how special they are and accept the free sweet blessings intended for them.
